I have been having such a challenge with acid reflux & heartburn lately! Usually it's just the acid reflux--which is uncomfortable, but livable--but occasionally I've been getting severe heartburn that has sucked majorly. Like, someone-is-digging-into-my-chest-with-a-shovel sucked. I know this is common (some folks even tell me baby's more likely to be a boy because of it), so I thought I'd share the things that have worked the best for me:
1. Boiron's Acidil.
It's homeopathic, and works wonders. Last week at work when I thought I might cry or stop breathing from the pain, I took some that were in our staff supplement drawer (I love working at Radiance!) and within 5 minutes the pain was completely gone. (As a side-note: eating like, 20 green olives stuffed with garlic cloves will give you heartburn. Just a warning)
2. Earth Mama Angel Baby's Heartburn Tea.
It's ingredients include marshmallow root, lemon balm, chamomile, spearmint, and red raspberry leaf. It's intended as 'an after-meals soother' or preventative, but the chamomile in particular really helps me when I'm in need.
3. Single herbs like chamomile (see the tea above) or slippery elm bark are also helpful. I've even experienced relief from ginger chews, as long as they have actual ginger in them. Some herbs I've avoided while in the midst of heartburn is peppermint. You'll notice the tea above has spearmint in it, and this is okay as it is much milder and does not have the same effect on the esophagus as peppermint. I do drink peppermint on occasion before meals to aid digestion, but in the throws of acid reflux, I stay away from it.
4. Finally, plain yogurt or kefir can work wonders on both acid reflux and heartburn.
I hope this is helpful to anyone (pregnant or not) who suffers from these two conditions from time to time, and if not, I hope it wasn't too boring for the rest of you!

I'm sorry you are dealing with this already!!! I didn't have this until my third trimester. But it was so awful!! I wish I would've known about some of these. I will know the next time (if there ever is one) ;)
ReplyDeleteI love these posts! I have not struggled with this much yet (mostly bloating like a hot air balloon) but I know I will and it's great to have homeopathic remedies on hand.
ReplyDeleteI have also been consuming one too many green olives stuffed with garlic...in my bloody mary mix sans alcohol. I better watch out.
