Excitement instead of Dread

I read, in Lieberman's "Easing Labor Pain," that by birth time our baby will have been experiencing lots of sounds similar to a busy street! That from all of my internal sounds (digestion, heart beat, etc), my voice, other voices, the baby is fine coming out into a room full of noise, and hushed voices aren't necessary. So now I'm totally obsessed with the idea of talking so she/he/etc can hear me, and making sure Brant does the same.

I was reading some of the descriptions of little alert babies being born and cradled on their mamas, and for the first time I actually felt...excited...about this. I'm just in awe, imagining our little baby being in this world, looking around and taking it all in before she/he/etc sleeps.

I'm so relieved to be feeling more of the joy and wonder of this, instead of the fear and unexpectedness.

  1. I'm so glad that excitement has set in. I was so excited to see what my baby's feet would look like. I mean my baby will have feet!!!! Not a huge realization but it made me so excited. sigh...babies being born...... gets me every time. There is no feeling like just birthing your child and the shock and awe that YOU just did that and that baby is the being that has been forming inside of you and how perfect that being is. shit I'm crying now.... lol I'm so happy for you Brandy.

  2. Isn't it amazing how connected babies are to their mothers, and to their world, even before they exit the womb? Most scientists and doctors agree that by about 20 weeks, a baby can recognize and distinguish its mothers voice from others that filter through! I agree with that, too, because with both Felicity and our new baby girl on the way, I've been able to feel them kick more when I speak, and feel how the movements change depending on who is speaking, or what music I'm playing. I'm just in awe of the entire process!

Part of the reason "shhh"ing babies works so well is because if you combine that with swaying/rocking and swaddling close to your body, it mimics the womb. Felicity would instantly calm down and fall asleep when we'd "shhh" loudly in her ear, mimicking the womb sounds, and sway, while thumping her bottom in a heartbeat rhythm. (The bottom thumping is crazy in how well it works!)

So happy for you and Brant, especially that you're able to really appreciate the amazing journey of pregnancy and not be caught up in the fear and details. <3
